Over 80 people have been injured – eight of them seriously – after lightning struck German festival Rock Am Ring for the second straight year.
Police have given an update revealing the full scale of the damage, telling German media that two people had to be resuscitated after the lightning strike hit the festival grounds at Mendig, about 100km west of Frankfurt, around 8pm on Friday, 3rd June.
As the ABC reports, performances resumed about two hours after the incident but the event has now been cancelled due to weather concerns.
They say lightning never strikes twice in the same place but this is the second year that this has happened at Rock Am Ring. In 2015, 33 people were injured when lightning struck the festival.
Police originally reported that 8 people had been injured this time around but that number has now been upped to more than 80.
Red Hot Chili Peppers and Black Sabbath were still due to play Rock AM Ring, but it’s now been cancelled, with authorities in the area revoking the event’s licence early on Sunday morning.
Organisers said they regretted the decision but accepted it because of the need to ensure the safety of fans.
