US Cult Filmmaker John Waters Is Headed For The Sydney Opera House

Famous – and perhaps infamous – filmmaker, satirist, visual artist and author, John Waters, is on his way back to Sydney this year for an unmissable night of debaucherous reflections at the iconic Opera House.

Waters is more than just Hairspray to many fans, he’s the salty, cynical and brilliantly satirical mind behind some of the most conversation-stirring films and productions through the 1960’s and 1970’s, while the 1990’s saw his cult following strengthen off the back of the release of films including Cry-Baby and Serial Mom.

Waters’ return to Sydney will give fans the opportunity to sit in one of the country’s most hallowed venues and hear observations and anecdotes, straight from the acidic-tongued man himself. It promises to be hilarious, dark and gorgeously devious.

“John Water is a true legend whose unique and distinctive aesthetic has had an immeasurable effect on cinema and queer culture,” says Dr Edwina Throsby, who is behind the Sydney Opera House’s Talks & Ideas series. “I have high hopes that the audience for his unmissable talk with laugh, cry, and need to suppress a vomit.”

Over almost a decade now, the Opera House has been hosting acclaimed in-conversation sessions with a wide variety of names; from philosopher Alain de Botton to Yoko Ono and Stephen Hawking. John Waters’ addition is perfectly in line with the boundary pushing type of conversation the series has become known and beloved for.
