Queens Of The Stone Age finally relaunched their website on Saturday, premiering snippets of songs from their forthcoming album, …Like Clockwork, and while many were frothing at the audio goodness contained on the front page, Music Feeds started to get excited about yet another cryptic clue left by the band in the website’s back end.
As you can see in the below screenshot, the source code for http://qotsa.com contains the usual stuff you’d expect to find in such places (internets, how do they work?!) except for the inclusion of 4 notes left interspersed within the lines of working code – “Vampyre Friends Is Sailing”.
So what is this? Another clue in lieu of new? Red herring? Cheeky trolling coder fun? We don’t really know. What we do know is that QOTSA are notorious for baiting the awaiting with teasers and hints relating to their forthcoming releases.
Not only was the entirety of Lullabies To Paralyze found available on the QOTSA website pre-release (deliberate or not), but the band has also been plugging …Like Clockwork via a series of cryptic statements sent to UK music magazines over the last couple of months.
These statements have all been prefaced with fragments of text that, when pieced together, form an incomplete ballad poem:
A stitch in time will save you 9
But some things you can’t fix
So if you find you’re out of time
Then…
‘THEN’ WHAT?! “Eat a bag of dicks” fits the meter, but seems unlikely at this juncture. Of course, it’s possible that the final statement has been lost in some ungodly, backwards UK music press mail room, but there’s also the possibility that this new “Vampyre Friends Is Sailing” message is connected in some way to the missing phrase in the incomplete poem.
Of course, there’s also the possibility it could mean nothing at all. So what’s going on here? Can any QOTSA fans shed light on this subject? Does even Josh Homme know what’s going on here?
We’re calling on the power of the internet (again, how do they work?!) to help us solve this riddle before the inevitable single drop pre album release. …Like Clockwork is expected some time in June 2013.
