Though the 2014 instalment of Vivid Sydney concluded mere months ago, the first act has already confirmed for Vivid Sydney 2015. Billed as the theatrical centrepiece of next year’s event, Here Lies Love, a musical from the minds of David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, will be making its way to Sydney next May.
Reaching beyond the realms of biography and traditional plays and musicals, Here Lies Love is a boundary-pushing theatrical event that tells the story of Imelda Marcos, widow of Ferdinand Marcos, former dictator of The Philippines, tracing her meteoric rise to power and her eventual downfall.
As the Sydney Morning Herald reports, the production takes place in a unique disco club setting, with the action unfolding among the audience, who are encouraged to dance, move, and interact. The elaborate production also features an incredible 360-degree scenic and video environment.
“It’s the story of the Marcoses, their regime and the strength of the Philippine people, but told in a way that hasn’t been experienced by people in Sydney or Australia before,” said producer Rodney Rigby. “The actors are right there with you and the participation of the audience really serves the storytelling.
Here Lies Love is based on Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s 2010 album of the same name, which featured a range of guest vocalists including Sia, Florence Welch, and St Vincent. The album was adapted for the stage by Tony-nominated director Alex Timbers and is currently garnering acclaim in New York.
It’s presently unclear if either Fatboy Slim or the former Talking Heads leader will make their way Down Under to oversee the production or to perform during Vivid Sydney. Readers can head over to the official Here Lies Love Sydney website for more details, including info on auditioning for the production.
