Watch A Trailer For Beyoncé’s New Visual Album ‘Black Is King’

Beyoncé has shared a trailer for her forthcoming visual album Black Is King. Written, produced and directed by the singer, it’s set for release via Disney+ on Friday, 31st July. The project follows Bey’s previous involvement with Disney for last year’s CGI remake of The Lion King, which, in addition to voicing Nala, saw her record new music and curate companion album The Lion King: The Gift.

Referred to as “a celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience”, Black Is King “reimagines the lessons of The Lion King for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns,” per a press release. Black Is King “is an affirmation of a grand purpose, with lush visuals that celebrate Black resilience and culture. The film highlights the beauty of tradition and Black excellence.”

In addition to Bey herself, Black Is King also features appearances from Jay-Z, Kelly Rowland, Naomi Campbell, Pharrell Williams, Lupita Nyong’o and Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles-Lawson.

“With this visual album, I wanted to present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message, and what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy,” commented Bey in a presser.

Last month, Bey dropped new surprise single ‘Black Parade’ for Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the US. “Put your fists up in the air, show black love,” she sings on the track. “Need peace and reparation for my people.”
