Canadian fusion hip hop/jazz outfit BADBADNOTGOOD were the final band to partake in triple j‘s Like A Version segment, popping by the triple j studios to provide an original and a cover.
The guys went old-school with a cover of The Beach Boys‘ 1966 classic God Only Knows, delving into their jazz chops and setting up the cover with a gorgeous soprano sax-driven intro. From then on BADBADNOTGOOD moved into an understated, lightly textured and stripped back take on the original, featuring some beautiful interplay between bass, keys, synth, acoustic and electric guitars.
They also brought in a special guest in the form of Sydney-based musician Jonti to perform some pretty damn faithful vocals, and he simply nails that surf rock vocal aesthetic.
It seemed to be a perfectly apt way for Matt and Alex to wrap up their time as Like A Version hosts, with several listeners texting in that the song had made them tear up at the fact that the duo are leaving the station at the end of next week.
BADBADNOTGOOD also gave a rendition of their own original 2016 track Lavender. Catch both performances, below.
