Smashing Pumpkins have released a pretty melodramatic music video for Being Beige, a song from their recently released ninth studio album Monuments to an Elegy. The Soundwave 2015 act have once again proved they’re completely comfortable with a 90s-esque video production style, and we’re not sure if that’s a positive or a negative thing.
The Pumpkins’ music video for Being Beige (below) sees frontman Billy Corgan take centre stage, of course. Vision of him singing the track is interspersed between images of natural phenomena such as fire and water, two strange naked women (the final shot is slightly NSFW) and brief footage of Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder playing along in the shadows.
Despite his bemused expressions in parts of the video, Corgan knows how to stare straight down the lens, and stare damn well. When he sings the first part of the chorus, “The world’s on fire,” you almost end up believing him.
Music Feeds reviewer Brenton Harris deemed Monuments to an Elegy to be “a welcome and wholly unexpected return to the band’s pop-infused alt-rock origins”.
Smashing Pumpkins will perform at Soundwave 2015, and have also announced Sidewaves in Melbourne and Sydney.
