The likes of Briggs, Courtney Barnett and Jessica Mauboy took part in a stirring musical tribute to late Indigenous singer-songwriter Gurrumul at the 2018 ARIA Awards in Sydney on Wednesday night.
Gurrumul’s daughter Jasmine Yunupingu also took part in the tribute, which featured a rendition of Gurrumul’s ‘Wulminda’, complete with an orchestra and an empty space on the ARIAs stage.
Both Briggs and Jessica Mauboy spoke during the performance, while Courtney Barnett contributed guitar to the arrangement.
The performance capped off Gurrumul’s victories in the Best Male Artist and Best Independent Release categories for posthumous album Djarimirri (Child Of The Rainbow). Watch the tribute in full, below.
Gurrumul and his collaborators had previously been awarded ARIA Awards Best World Music Album and Best Cover Art for Djarimirri (Child Of The Rainbow), taking their overall tally to four.
Earlier this year, Djarimirri (Child Of The Rainbow) also became the first Indigenous language album to debut at #1 on the ARIA charts.
The 2018 ARIA Awards were dominated by Gurrumul and Amy Shark, whose teams both claimed four awards apiece.
