Over the weekend, the 2020 MTV Europe Music Awards took place. The likes of BTS, Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Yungblud and Little Mix (who hosted proceedings) were among those honoured – not to mention G Flip, who took home Best Australian Act.
One of the performers at this year’s virtual ceremony was Doja Cat, who also won the Best New award. The rapper brought her 2019 Hot Pink hit ‘Say So’ to the stage, with a twist.
Performing alongside a full band, Doja – who emerged from a TV in full Samara from The Ring mode – turned the original from a blissed-out pop gem into a heavy metal banger with blistering, distorted guitars and frenetic live drums.
While it’s far from the first time a pop artist has turned up the volume of a more subdued track for a live performance, it’s rare that a song undergoes such a complete transformation as this one, and is pulled off quite this well.
Back in September, Sydney duo Polish Club delivered an excellent cover of ‘Say So’ as part of their appearance on Like a Version that, while not quite as frenzied as Doja’s EMAs performance, demonstrated the versatile nature of the song.
