Watch Drapht’s Saxed-Up Cover Of The Avalanches For ‘Like A Version’

Aussie hip hop veteran Drapht has joined Matt Okine and Alex Dyson in the triple j studios for another red-hot-go at Like A Version, complete with a cover of The Avalanches‘ recent single Frankie Sinatra.

There’s a very good reason why Drapht has been asked back on the show several times (both as a solo artist and as a guest for others), and that’s because he brings his top shelf A-Game every bloody time.

If you needed another example of why Drapht is one of the most powerfully entertaining forces in hip hop, his cover of Frankie Sinatra (below) came complete with Morgan Bain on vocals, as well as a flute and a baritone sax live in the studio (yes, that’s the one Lisa plays on The Simpsons).

Despite the throng of guests that joined Drapht for the cover, he actually gave quite a stripped-back performance of The Avalanches’ hit, slowing down the beat and punching some swinging and well-articulated lyrics.

While in the studio, Drapht also spoke candidly about his love/hate relationship with music, especially when making music had become his sole livelihood several years ago, and explained it was for that reason that he opened a restaurant in Perth.

He then performed his own original single Mexico, sans featured artists Dune Rats. It goes without saying that it was lighter effort without the Dune Rats boys there, with Morgan Bain giving a much more tempered performance on guitar.

Catch both performances in full, below.
