Footage has emerged of the very unexpected musical pairing of Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder and pop star Beyoncé performing the Bob Marley & The Wailers classic Redemption Song at the Global Citizen Festival charity event in New York.
As Consequence Of Sound reports, Queen Bee was invited on stage by, uh, King V, during Pearl Jam’s headline set at the poverty awareness event, and after a nice firm handshake, went on to share vocals on the track.
Footage of a Nelson Mandela speech was played behind Vedder and Beyoncé during their performance, which saw Vedder play all the instrumentals on acoustic guitar. The pair’s performance can be viewed in full below.
Aside from Pearl Jam and Beyoncé, this year’s Global Citizen Festival also saw performances from the likes of Ed Sheeran and Coldplay. The event is part of the Global Poverty Project, a UN-backed campaign to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030. Redemption Song appears on Bob Marley & The Wailers’ ninth album, Uprising, which was released in 1980.
