The first footage of Outkast‘s Andre 3000 playing Jimi Hendrix in the new biopic All Is By My Side has surfaced, with the John Ridley-directed film set to debut at Austin’s South By Southwest Festival on 12th March.
The minute long clip from the film sees Hendrix asking muse Linda Keith (Imogen Poots) to join him at Monterey Pop Festival, with Andre 3000 showing that he’s more than capable of taking on the daunting role. Of course, the performer is no stranger to acting, having previously appeared in films like Four Brothers, Battle In Seattle, and Idlewild, which also starred his musical partner in crime, Big Boi.
The film tells the story of Hendrix’s transformation from backing musician in New York to guitar legend in London in the year before he became a household name. The movie did not receive permission to use any of Hendrix’s music in the film by the late superstar’s estate, so instead has made do with showing him performing covers of songs by The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Muddy Waters and Elmore James.
There’s no news yet as to when All Is By My Side will see a theatrical release, with the film having debuted at last year’s Toronto Film Festival. Director Ridley took home this year’s Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his script for 12 Years A Slave.
