Watch: Green Day’s Live Return At SXSW

Green Day made their live return at Austin’s Moody Theater as part of SXSW last night – and by all reports, it was a triumphant one.

The show – which was the band’s first since Billie Joe Armstrong‘s on-stage meltdown in Las Vegas and stint in rehab – lasted for around two hours and featured familiar hallmarks of a Green Day stadium show, such as a toilet paper gun and a T-shirt firing cannon.

NME and Billboard report that the show opened with the theme from The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, and within seconds, Armstrong uttered a series of expletives and demanded that the crowd “go crazy! This aint a f**kin’ cafe”.

He then belted out opening track 99 Revolutions, standing on the stage monitor on one leg and playing guitar behind his head. Armstrong also pulled a young member of the crowd on stage to sing the final verse, and the young man kissed him on the lips.

Several tracks from the band’s recent Uno!, Dos! and Tre! albums filled the first half of the set, while the second half featured classic tracks such as American Idiot, Minority, Jesus Of Suburbia and Basket Case.

Brain Stew became an impromptu medley featuring snippets of Guns N’ Roses’ Sweet Child O’ Mine and AC/DC’s Highway To Hell, while their cover of Shout also featured snippets of The Beatles’ Hey Jude.
