Brisbane indie act Holy Holy‘s ambitions are high, going straight to the top for this week’s Like A Version with a cover of Joy Division’s well-loved classic Love Will Tear Us Apart, which — almost unbelievably — has never been covered for the segment.
As singer Timothy Carroll explains, he and guitarist/producer Oscar Dawson didn’t have to dig too far past the big hits when looking for songs to cover. “There was so many ideas floating around,” Carroll told Mornings hosts Matt & Alex. “We actually worked up a version of Guns N’ Roses November Rain and we were like ‘This could be it,’ but we couldn’t quite get it to work.”
Thankfully they’ve managed to get Love Will Tear Us Apart to work, injecting chiming guitar leads into the familiar synth strains while still staying true to the original’s pounding drums and mournful vocals.
Holy Holy will be a part of the inaugural Beyond The Valley festival, held at Phillip Island over New Year’s. The band is also currently playing a string of shows across the country. You can check out full tour dates below.
