Lorde has covered Britney Spears in a new medley that combines Spears’ ‘Break the Ice’ with ‘Fallen Fruit’, a track from Lorde’s recently-released Solar Power.
The performance video was directed by Alfred Marroquin and filmed for Vogue in the New York Botanical Gardens, and opens with Lorde’s take on Spears’ 2007 Blackout cut.The singer-songwriter performed in a bright-red crop top and pants, seemingly a nod towards Spears’ red latex jumpsuit from the ‘Oops!… I Did It Again’ clip.
Lorde’s take on ‘Break the Ice’ is relatively sparse, primarily just the beat and keys from the track. Around halfway through, Lorde transitions into a similarly minimal rendition of ‘Fallen Fruit’. In the context, opening lyric “To the ones who came before us” takes on a greater significance.
Just yesterday, it emerged that after a lengthy legal battle, Britney’s 13-year-long conservatorship may finally be coming to an end. Her father and conservator, Jamie Spears, filed a petition to end the arrangement that has controlled his daughter’s life and finances and received heightened scrutiny in recent years.
Filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, the petition from Jamie Spears’ lawyer states: “If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance.”
Lorde released third album Solar Power last month, having previewed the record with its title track, ‘Stoned at the Nail Salon’ and ‘Mood Ring’. The New Zealand-born singer is set to play a string of Australian shows in 2022 as part of her Solar Power world tour.
