Diplo and Major Lazer have made history in Cuba, becoming the first big-name EDM act ever to perform on the Caribbean island nation’s soil.
They’re also the first US act of any kind to do so since Audioslave‘s landmark concert in 2005.
But whereas Chris Cornell & co played to an impressive crowd of 70,000, officials estimate almost HALF A MILLION Cubans turned out to catch the US electro super-crew live in Havana.
They played a free pubic concert last Sunday, 6th March, near the US Embassy at the city’s waterfront event space, La Tribuna Antiimperialista José Martí, in front of an estimated 450,000 punters.
That’s 15 TIMES the size of Splendour In The Grass’s 30,000-cap crowd and almost 5 times Glastonbury Festival’s 100,000.
And incredible vision of the historic performance has since appeared online, causing jaws to drop even lower.
As well as being super impressive, it’s also a heartening sight after decades of some pretty serious diplomatic tensions between the US and Cuba. The nations cut ties wayyyy back in 1961 during the height of the Cold War and only just buried the hatchet in July of 2014.
Aussie (ish) supergroup The Dead Daisies also made the trip to Cuba for an historic tour at the end of last year, while legends The Rolling Stones are set to play a free open air concert in the country at the end of the month.
It’ll be interesting to see whether they can top the monster crowd that flocked to catch the Diplo-fronted Major Lazer though.
