Footage of Nirvana‘s segment from the official broadcast of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘s class of 2014 induction ceremony has been released online, featuring a video reel tribute to the group, their induction by REM‘s Michael Stipe, acceptance speeches, and the band’s performance.
After a reel featuring extensive audio of Nirvana’s late frontman Kurt Cobain, Stipe begins by commending the band on their power as artists and ability to “capture a moment,” saying, “I use the word ‘artists’ instead of ‘musicians’ because the band… were artists in every sense of the word.”
“Nirvana tapped into a voice that was yearning to be heard,” Stipe continues. “Nirvana were kicking against the mainstream. They spoke truth and a lot of people listened… They were singular and loud and melodic and deeply original, and that voice. That voice. Kurt, we miss you. I miss you.”
During his speech drummer Dave Grohl paid tribute to his influences and thanked his parents who “never told me not to listen to Slayer,” while bassist Krist Novoselic thanked the band’s fans and several people who helped the band artistically, including Steve Albini and Buzz Osbourne.
Over the weekend, clips of the 2014 Rock Hall induction ceremony appeared online, including a snippet of Nirvana playing Smells Like Teen Spirit, fronted by Joan Jett as part of the band’s all-female helmed performance that also featured the likes of Lorde, Kim Gordon, and St Vincent.
