Indigenous Mildura rapper Philly (real name Phillip Murray) has taken to the triple j studios this morning for a special NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week edition of Like A Version, covering Bob Marley‘s Three Little Birds.
Philly prefaced his cover by saying, “I feel like the indigenous culture needs to be celebrated so much more and just acknowledged, because it is the oldest living culture in the world and that’s something not only Aboriginal people to be proud of — that’s something that the whole of Australia should be proud of.
“Bob Marley, he was down for just peace, love and unity — I’m down for peace, love and unity.”
Philly’s beautiful take on Marley’s roots reggae classic (below) saw him backed by a mate on an acoustic guitar, as he rapped a combination of Marley’s lyrics and his own over the top.
While in the studio, Philly also performed an acoustic version of his original track Dreamchaser, which appears on his Not My Life EP.
Catch both performances in full, below.
