Judas Priest vocalist Rob Halford took to the stage of the Alternative Press Awards earlier this week to tackle his band’s classic jam Breaking The Law with Japanese prodigies Babymetal at his side.
Halford has heaped praise on the rising outfit, who have taken the metal scene by storm, explaining, “They’re leading the charge into the new frontier of heavy metal,” and describing the performance with the band as “really intense: Babymetal give a thousand percent just like Priest”.
While the band has scored numerous tips of the hat from those who sit high top Mt. Metal including Deftones’ Chino Moreno, Trivium’s Matt Heafy and Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, this is Rob goddamn Halford, and it doesn’t go much further than that.
The weight of the moment wasn’t lost on Babymetal either. Su-metal commented prior to the event “Honestly, I am still at a loss of what to feel. But to be able to perform together with the Metal God, I am in disbelief.”
Babymetal kicked off the show by performing another ode to Priest, Painkiller, before Halford strutted up on stage, red leather jacket and all, to complete the show.
The AP Awards took place over the weekend and also featured performances from Creed’s Scott Stapp, A Day To Remember, Twenty One Pilots and more.
