Hottest 100 winners The Rubens have taken to the triple j studios to attempt a mashup of two smash hits from 2015: Adele‘s Hello and Kendrick Lamar‘s King Kunta (yes, the very song which placed second behind The Rubens’ Hoops on the Hottest 100).
Before performing their Adele/Kendrick mashup, The Rubens reassured listeners that they chose to cover King Kunta in December, before they thought they’d even have a chance of making the Hottest 100 top 10 with Hoops, which ended up beating out King Kunta for the number one spot.
The Ruben’s mashup of Hello and King Kunta (below) was definitely unexpected, but held up for the most part among some key changes and a guitar solo, despite some wobbly bass lines and the soaring chorus of Hello falling pretty flat.
While in the triple j studios, The Rubens also performed Hoops, a song which has copped some criticism since it took out the Hottest 100. The Church’s Steve Kilbey, for example, said the track has “no oomph or grunt”, and said The Rubens “do not rock”. The band have since hit back at Kilbey’s comments.
