System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian has watched his dream come to life over the weekend in Austria. Joined on stage by the Das Karussell Orchestra, Tankian premiered to the world his latest project, the Orca symphony.
The showcase was a long time in the works and was bankrolled by a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign undertaken by Tankian. $25,000 was raised by the fan-funded service, which will go towards the concept that will also include a film of the concert set to be released in 2013. Tankian, wanting to be as transparent as possible with the campaign also stated that all extra funds will go towards further mixing, mastering, and promotion, according to Banana1015.
Fortunately, fans at the gig had their cameras at the ready and produced some fine bootleg footage, albeit for the finger in the way of the first one, anyway, Tankian can be heard introducing the symphony by stating: “Orca is the first four-act symphony that I have composed, a mix of early 20th-century compositional styles combined with the powerful range of film scoring. I decided to name my symphony ‘Orca’ because orcas ‘appear to have no parallel outside humans’ in terms of their cultural faculties. An orca is really a dolphin with much darker tendencies. I see this dichotomy as a great metaphor for humanity.”
The performance was a smash hit with the fans, who responded with thunderous applause.
