Before Tame Impala became the global juggernaut we know and love, multi-instrumental lord Kevin Parker was beating the skins in a psych rock side-project called Mink Mussel Creek.
And after recently teasing us with a studio reunion on Instagram, the band — which also features Pond’s Nicholas Allbrook, Shiny Joe Ryan, Steve Summerlin and Richard Ingham — has gotten back together IRL for a one-off show in their home state.
Mink Mussel Creek returned to the stage with an out-of-control set at WA’s Camp Doogs festival this past weekend, which stretched for around 50 minutes.
“Massive thx to everyone at Camp Doogs 2016 and the gang at Good Times Arts Inc. for the best bloody weekend,” the band posted on Facebook, along with some slightly dodgy footage from KP’s “crusty smartphone back-cam”.
“Until next time xoxo.”
This of course implies that there will be a next time, and that we haven’t seen the last of MMC.
Following the monumental global success of their third album Currents last year, the members of Tame Impala have been spending a lot of their touring downtime time working on other projects.
Bassist Cam Avery has been putting the finishing touches on his new solo album, while frontman Kevin Parker has been playing producer with Lady Gaga on her epic new comeback single.
It’s pretty rad that a bonafide superstar and Gaga-certified musical genius like KP still has time for his old band, and it’ll be interesting to see whether this one-off reunion leads to any new material from Mink Mussel Creek, who released their debut album Mink Mussel Manticore back in 2014.
While we wait to find out, you can catch the actual Tame Impala performing live at next year’s Laneway Festival, and catch footage of MMC’s one-off reunion show at Camp Doogs below.
