Your faves The 1975 have just bagged a massive honour at the 2019 BRIT Awards, beating out the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Gorillaz, Little Mix and Years & Years to claim the Best British Group Award.
Interestingly, the rockers deviated from the usual “we’d like to thank all the little people” pleasantries during their acceptance speech to use the (literal) platform to take a stand on misogyny in the music business.
Stepping up to the mic, frontman Matty Healy quoted an article by The Guardian‘s deputy music editor Laura Snapes about the recent sexual abuse scandal involving singer-songwriter Ryan Adams.
“I just want you to listen to me for one sec,” Healy said. “A friend of ours Laura Snapes said this, and I just thought we should all really, really think about it.
“She said that: in music male misogyny acts are examined for nuance and defended as traits of difficult artists. Whilst women and those who call them out are treated as hysterics who don’t understand art,” he continued.
Snapes has since responded to the shoutout, saying: “I am gobsmacked, and honoured that he’d use his platform to make this statement”.
