Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace first went public with her battle with gender dysphoria two years ago and is now arguably the most prominent transgender woman in music today. The lead singer of the Florida-bred punk rock group is documenting her transition in a new reality series for AOL, entitled True Trans with Laura Jane Grace, which has now unveiled its first trailer.
The series follows Grace as she travels around the United States, meeting and talking to
transgender men and women about their experiences with coming out, transitioning and what gender means to them.
“My earliest memories are of gender dysphoria,” says Grace in the trailer (below). “I felt lost, confused and at times like I couldn’t survive. It took until I was 31 to publicly come out as a transgender woman. Nothing has been the same since.”
The 10-part documentary series will also take a look at Grace’s life as a rock star, mother and wife, having married and had a child with wife Heather Hannoura before coming out out as transgender at age 31.
True Trans With Laura Jane Grace will kick off on AOL with four episodes on October 10th in honour of National Coming Out Day. Earlier this year Against Me! released its sixth album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, which chronicles Grace’s struggle with gender identity. Read our review here.
