The Mountain Goats Performing ‘This Year’ Live With Stephen Colbert Is Incredibly Wholesome

The Mountain Goats, the indie-folk project of John Darnielle, recently appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. They were there to spruik the band’s new album In League With Dragons, but at the request of host Colbert they also performed fan favourite ‘This Year’, and Colbert got on the mic too.

‘This Year’ is one of the band’s better-known tracks, a powerful ode to resilience and survival in the face of struggle. It was released in 2005 off their seminal album The Sunset Tree and remains perhaps their most popular song.

“The Mountain Goats’ new album is called In League With Dragons. This next song is not from that album,” announces Colbert in the video. “It’s a great album, but this next song is not on that album, because I asked them to play this song for me because it’s one of my favourite songs of theirs,” he adds.

The Goats then perform the track, with Colbert singing alongside Darnielle in the unbelievably wholesome video. The band also played ‘Sicilian Crest’, a track from the aforementioned In League With Dragons. Check out both videos below.
