One of the most covered songs of all time has now been done properly. In an act of captivatingly unnatural vocal talent, Melbourne prog band Toehider’s frontman Michael Mills has performed Kate Bush‘s 1978 hit song Wuthering Heights in its original (very, very high) vocal key.
“I can only do it once, so you know this is going to be a first take,” Mills admits straight off the bat, comparing himself to cartoon character Daffy Duck and his dangerous, one-time-only attempt to win a talent show.
In the cover, Mills manages to work in a short but sweet guitar solo and even blesses us with a few Kate Bush dance-moves and crazy eyes as well. Unlike Daffy’s effort, there’s no way that you’ll only watch it once.
The YouTube clip, which you can view below alongside Bush’s original, has amassed over 130,000 views in only two days, thanks in no small part to its popularity on internet community Reddit.
Mills is slowly gaining notoriety as a formidable vocalist. His guest vocals on the massive 2013 Ayreon release The Theory Of Everything were highly praised, and Toehider dropped a prog-metal cover of Mariah Carey‘s vocally complex Christmas classic All I Want For Christmas Is You late last year.
Toehider had a busy 2013, touring with Devin Townsend, The Protomen, and featuring at Melbourne’s Progfest and Sydney’s Featherfest events. They also released a single by the name of Whatever Makes You Feel Superior, taken from the forthcoming album What Kind of Creature Am I?.
Wuthering Heights remains Kate Bush’s best selling single. It was written when she was just 18 years of age, and is named after the 1847 Emily Bronte novel of the same name.
