Watch Violent Soho Mash Up Nirvana & Silversun Pickups For ‘Like A Version’

Violent Soho have just made their Like A Version debut, and it was every bit as epic as expected.

Mansfield’s finest popped into triple j HQ this morning, and after punching out a rendition of their WACO original No Shade, they set off on their maiden voyage on the waters of Like A Version coverdom, and their vessel of choice defied all of our predictions.

The lads delivered a rendition of Silversun Pickups‘ 2006 tune Lazy Eye, bizarrely mashed up with a snippet of the intro riff from Nirvana‘s Smells Like Teen Spirit.

It was an odd and slightly disjointed way to launch into the cover, but the rest of the performance was the definition of the Like A Version credo: the group taking the song and making it completely their own. In fact, if you’d never heard Lazy Eye before, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a Violent Soho original.

The fellas fleshed out the Pickup’s Carnavas album cut with jammy interludes, synth strings and a sprawling guitar solo, joking (or maybe not) that they had to shave it down from a running-time that hit north of the seven-minute mark.

Altogether it was a solid debut, but we were still a bit disappointed that the lads didn’t take a crack at Afroman’s classic Because I Got High.

Violent Soho are just about to kick off a big Aussie tour with The Bronx, Luca Brasi and Tired Lion and you can also catch them live at this year’s New Years-straddling Falls Festival.
