Weezer Have Launched Their Own Version of Wordle: “Weezle”

When software developer Josh Wardle created the now ubiquitous web-based word game, Wordle, you don’t suppose he anticipated a Weezer-themed spin-off. But that’s precisely what’s happened, with Weezer frontperson, River Cuomo, announcing the launch of Weezle.

“If you like Wordle and Weezer, you’ll probably like Weezle,” Cuomo wrote on Twitter. The game can be played right here. Weezle follows the same basic format as Wordle, challenging users to guess the word of the day in six attempts. The tweak, however, is that the word must feature in the lyrics to a Weezer song.

Led by Cuomo, Weezer have released 15 albums over the last 28 years, including OK Human and Van Weezer, both of which came out in 2021. Their singles discography includes post-grunge power pop classics such as ‘Undone – The Sweater Song’, ‘Buddy Holly’, ‘El Scorcho’ and ‘Say It Ain’t So’, as well as radio hits ‘Hash Pipe’, ‘Island In the Sun’ and ‘Beverly Hills’, and the Grammy-winning ‘Pork and Beans’.

In other words, there are an awful lot of lyrics to choose from, including such choice lines as “What’s with these homies dissin’ my girl?” (from ‘Buddy Holly’) and “I’ll eat my candy with the pork and beans,” (from ‘Pork and Beans’).

Last month, Weezer posted on social media in acknowledgement of their 30th anniversary. “On [15th February, 1992], Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Matt Sharp and Jason Cropper met at TK Productions at 1956 Cotner Ave in West LA, for the first of 3 days of rehearsals, running through about 20 different songs numerous times, including a few songs that would make it to the Blue Album 2 years later,” the band wrote.

Brian Bell replaced Cropper in 1993. Sharp left the band in 1997. Scott Shriner has been Weezer’s bass player since 2001.
