Adelaide’s 20th annual WOMADelaide festival has announced its first round lineup for 2016.
Over 20 artists will partake in next year’s world music bonanza, including The Cat Empire, Violent Femmes, Marlon Williams, Songhoy Blues, 47SOUL, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and stacks more.
There’ll also be an exclusive performance from Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo, who’s teaming up with with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra to present “a suite of orchestrations” featuring her own tunes, as well as those of legendary composers Phillip Glass and George Gershwin.
The music programme will, as usual, be complimented by an illuminating speaker programme as well, which is this year headed up by Canadian environmentalist and general rockstar of science David Suzuki, who will appear as part of a Planet Talks series presented by The University of South Australia.
WOMADelaide Director Ian Scobie said in a statement (via Tonedeaf): “Hosting Angélique Kidjo and David Suzuki at WOMADelaide in the space of a few days, perfectly encapsulates the breadth of the program in connecting audiences with such wonderfully engaging cultural and social innovators in their fields”.
WOMADelaide 2016 will run over four days from Friday, 11th March to Monday, 14th March at Adelaide’s Botanic Park. Limited discounted early-bird tickets are currently available via the festival’s official website.
