The xx are clearly up to something. While we slept, the band uploaded a new track to their ‘In The Studio’ Spotify playlist which bears nothing no track name and no artist name, but an unmistakable xx vibe.
At this stage, the untitled ambient track (which returns no result in Shazam — we checked) isn’t confirmed to be new xx material, but considering the information we have on hand, it could well be the first soundbite from their forthcoming new album.
Earlier in the year, The xx confirmed they were spending time in the studio, sharing a playlist of some tracks they’ve been pumping to get the juices flowing.
At the time it was nothing out of the ordinary – a bit of Frank Ocean, some Radiohead, Cat Power — but the latest addition makes it something a fair bit out of the ordinary. The track, which is also streaming on Apple Music, bears a Young Turks trademark, a label closely associated with the band.
The xx’s forthcoming body of work will be the follow up to 2012’s Coexist, with main ingredient Jamie xx dropping his latest output, In Colour, last year, so the stars are aligned for new XX to drop any… minute… now.
