Back in October we heard that pop punk giants Yellowcard would be suing Juice WRLD for $15 million. The band alleged that Juice WRLD’s track ‘Lucid Dreams’ ripped off melodic elements of Yellowcard’s ‘Holly Wood Died’ from 2006.
The lawsuit claimed that ‘Lucid Dreams’, “directly misappropriates quantitative and qualitatively important portions of [‘Holly Wood Died’] in a manner that is easily recognizable to the ordinary observer.”
It claimed that Juice WLRD and co-writer and producer Taz Taylor and Nick Mira copied the Yellowcard song knowingly.
When Juice WRLD then passed away on the 8th December, people wondered whether Yellowcard would still pursue the case.
Now, as XXL report, while Yellowcard did place the case on hold following Juice WRLD’s death, they still intend to pursue it.
Yellowcard’s attorney Richarde Busch told Digital Music News that the case was placed on hold so the band members and world could digest the news.
The previous date for the case was 9th December, one day after Juice WRLD passed away. It has now been rescheduled for Tuesday, 4th February next year.
Others included in the lawsuit are: co-writer and producer, Taz Taylor and publishers, Taz Taylor Beats, Artist 101 Publishing Group and publishing administrator Kobalt Music Services. Also involved is producer Nicholas Mira and his publishers Nick Mira Publishing, Electric Feel Music, and publishing administrator Songs of Universal. The song’s publisher BMG Rights Management will be in the lawsuit as well as record label Grade A Productions and its parent company, Interscope Records.
Yellowcard said in their complaint, “The Infringing Work and Infringing Sound Recording are not only substantially similar to the Original Work, but in some places virtually identical…The high degree of objective similarity between the Original Work and the Infringing Work extends well beyond the possibility of coincidence and could only reasonably be the result of an act of copying.”
