Following the release of their debut single back in August, Yirinda have returned with a fresh new single called ‘Thurum Voi (Look There)’. It’ll feature on the duo’s upcoming self-titled debut album, which is due for release on Friday, 16th February through Chapter Music.
Yirinda is the collaborative project between Butchulla Songman Fred Leone – a song and language custodian for the Butchulla people from the Fraser Coast region – and contrabassist/producer Samuel Pankhurst. The song, and the album, was recorded in Meanjin/Brisbane, and then mixed by the renowned Jake Miller in London – who has worked with Arca and Björk.
“Thurum Voi was written by my Aunty Nay Nay Bird,” says Leone. “It is a song calling Biral (Butchulla God) down to earth to guide the Butchulla people. Biral is the great sky spirit who ordered the creation of Butchulla country, sea and people.
“Aunty Nay Nay is an Elder of the Butchulla people and the Wonnamutta clan. She is a cultural knowledge holder and gifted these lyrics to me shortly before the visit from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to K’Gari in 2018.”
Speaking about working together, the duo say they both “see music in uniquely different ways”, and the album was designed to take the listener on an “overwhelming sensory journey”.
“Sam has synaesthesia and Fred has vivid imaginings of alternate vistas,” they say. “We’ve designed this album specifically to give the listener an overwhelming sensory journey. We’re painting with sound in an emotional landscape.”
