Dylan Alcott competed for his eighth consecutive Australian Open men’s quad wheelchair singles title last week. One day previous, the 31-year-old Alcott was named Australian Of the Year.
Prior to his appearance at this year’s Australian Open, Alcott announced the tournament would be his last. To celebrate Alcott’s retirement and appointment as Australian of the Year, Sydney brewers Young Henrys are declaring this Thursday, 3rd February “Dylan Alfroth Day.”
Young Henrys will donate a portion of February’s sale proceeds to the Dylan Alcott Foundation, a charity committed to helping young Australians with disabilities gain self-esteem and respect.
“I’m extremely thankful for the support from the team at Young Henrys,” said Alcott. “Dylan Alfroth day will be one to remember and I can’t wait to celebrate Thursday with many Newtowners in hand in my hometown of Melbourne.”
Young Henrys has commissioned a mural of Alcott, painted by Gadigal artist Jeswri (Jessie Wright), which will be unveiled at Melbourne venue Le Bon Ton this Thursday.
In addition to his seven Australian Open trophies, Alcott has won three French Opens, two Wimbledons and three US Opens, along with half a dozen Grand Slam doubles tournaments. He’s won four Paralympic Games gold medals—three for tennis and one for basketball—plus a silver medal in basketball.
He’s also the creator of the annual Ability Fest, the most recent instalment of which took place in November 2021 at Melbourne’s Alexandra Gardens. Performers included Alex the Astronaut, Eves Karydas, What So Not and JK-47.
For his work co-presenting ABC TV’s The Set, Alcott won the 2019 Logie Award for Most Popular New Talent.
