Gorillaz Are Making A Movie, Considering Making A Sequel To ‘Plastic Beach’

Gorillaz bandleader Damon Albarn is fresh from releasing Strange Timez, the first “season” of the band’s Song Machine series, which arrived last week featuring a star-studded list of guests including Robert Smith, Beck, ScHoolboy Q and more. That hasn’t stopped him, however, from discussing what’s next for the virtual crew.

In an interview with Radio.com, the Blur frontman revealed that he and his Gorillaz collaborators are currently at work at a second season of the audio-visual Song Machine project, along with a feature-length film.

“We are supposed to be making a film while we’re doing season two,” Albarn said. “We’ve signed contracts, we’ve begun scripts and stuff.”

“Making an animated film that’s kind of abstract is quite a big risk for a movie studio because they’re very expensive. If you’re telling a slightly obtuse story that only sometimes makes any sense, it’s quite difficult. That’s what we’ve discovered,” he added.

“But we will do it, we are doing it. I see a lot of people doing animated videos these days but I don’t think they really touch the quality of ours.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Albarn discussed the possibility of a sequel to the band’s much-lauded third album, 2010’s Plastic Beach, saying that “sadly, more than ever the need to keep reminding people that we need to change our habits; to somehow help our climate is really necessary.”
