Jim James Nearly Finished Debut Solo Album

My Morning Jacket haven’t even got around to releasing their new album, Circuital, yet frontman Jim James has revealed that he has nearly finished his first solo album.

Chicago news hub The AV Club reports that James is “80 per cent done” with the album, which is expected to be released early in 2012. The album marks his first foray into the solo domain, excepting of course his George Harrison tribute EP of 2009.

Describing the new album, James said, “I think it’s pretty different, but there’s obviously similarities, just because it’s my voice.”

He added that the LP is, “a comfortably lounging around the house thing, doing whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. I just love playing all sorts of different instruments, so I just wanted to be able to do that, and mess around with whatever I wanted to.”

He added that “we could probably play any of those songs with My Morning Jacket,” yet he felt their natural home was actually on a solo album.

“Some of the songs have a genetic code or something. They tell me they want to be on a solo record,” he said.

Circuital is due for release on May 31, and as previously reported, the band will play a live webcast from their Louisville, Kentucky base on the eve of the release.
