Kimbra Announces New Album ‘Primal Heart’, Previews New Music In Email To Fans

Kimbra has announced that her next album will be released in “early 2018”, and will be titled Primal Heart.

In an email sent to fans today, the New Zealand singer-songwriter says her upcoming third album is her “proudest work yet”, and a new single is “coming soon”.

“I know it’s been WAY too long since I put out new music out so don’t worry, I’m about to change that,” she writes.

“Since releasing [2014 album] The Golden Echo I’ve moved to New York (from Los Angeles) and set myself up a home studio! It’s my happy place/spaceship.

“Feels so good to dedicate a space to producing/writing and making music. It is here that I started to formulate a palette with which to create the next body of work.”

Kimbra says she began “knuckling down” on Primal Heart in January 2016.

“There was a boldness emerging, a new confidence, a sense of maturity, I felt myself become less interested in the decorative maximalism of my past sonic adventures and hunting more for a core emotion that unfolded with texture and mystery,” she says.

She says she began working with producer John Congleton after meeting him in New York while he was there working with Blondie.

“We formulated a band of incredible musicians (more about them another time!) to track demos live and experiment with new ideas over the course of about four days,” she says.

Kimbra also says she’s “so excited to soon get back on tour”, and has shared a behind-the-scenes video about the creation of Primal Heart (including a taste of new music), which you can watch below.

The Golden Echo featured cameos from the likes of Silverchair’s Daniel Johns, John Legend and members of Dillinger Escape Plan and Queens Of The Stone Age. Kimbra was later spotted in the studio with the likes of Skrillex, Miguel and Thundercat.
