Taking Back Sunday Announced New Album ‘Tidal Wave’

Great news, team: The summer that is youth needn’t end just yet as our emo forefathers Taking Back Sunday are still carrying the torch, announcing today a brand new album Tidal Wave set for release this year.

For those who have been paying attention, this shouldn’t come as the biggest shock. The band have been performing a brand new single off the album during the current Taste Of Chaos tour. The album (which will be their 7th studio effort) was pieced together by vocalist Adam Lazzara and guitarist John Nolan during moments of downtime throughout their Happiness Is album cycle.

Tidal Wave will also serve as a functional title, Lazzara reveals explaining to EW that it ties in with one of the motifs off the album “Even throughout each song on the record there are a lot of references to water. That’s why it seems like that title kept poking its neck out.”

Lazzara explains the band were keen to get in touch with their fanbase again for the album, looking away from their regular home of huge entertainment centres and focusing on music that could be performed in more intimate, smaller club settings.

“Our idea is to go to the smallest clubs we can go to. We’d like to debut this record as honestly as we can and what better way to do that in a small club?”

However, if you were expecting more songs about Setting Phasers To Stun or being Cute Without The E (therefore, Cut From The Team), you might want to shift your expectations. Lazzara explained that the band has never been comfortable with their label of ’emo’.

“Look, in my mind every album anyone’s ever written is an emo album because there’s a lot of emotion that goes into all of that. You can’t listen to Hey Jude and tell me that’s not an emo song. I don’t like being pigeonholed because I think there’s more to it than that. I think this record highlights that very well, so no I wouldn’t consider it an emo record in the traditional sense of the word.”

“With our first records, we’re writing from the perspective of 17, 18-year-old kids and now it’s like as you grow older the blinders get pulled back and you have a different way of looking at the world around you,”

Tidal Wave will crash on Friday, 16th September.
