Sydney alternative pop artist Montaigne has announced details of her third studio album, making it!. The record comes out on Friday, 2nd September and includes the singles ‘now (in space)’, ‘always be you’ (featuring Talking Heads’ David Byrne), and ‘make me feel so…’ (featuring Icelandic musician Daði Freyr).
To coincide with the album announcement, Montaigne’s Jess Cerro has shared the album’s latest single, ‘die b4 u’. Cerro co-produced ‘die b4 u’ and the rest of making it! with producer Dave Hammer (Genesis Owusu, Lime Cordiale). Montaigne has also announced a run of making it! tour dates for September and October 2022.
Montaigne releases ‘die b4 u’ from upcoming album ‘making it!’
making it! is Montaigne’s third album, following 2016’s Glorious Heights and 2019’s Complex. Cerro has kept busy in the three-year interval between albums. Montaigne won SBS’ Eurovision – Australia Decides contest in 2020 with the song ‘Don’t Break Me’. She was due to represent Australia at Eurovision 2020 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, but the contest was cancelled due to COVID-19.
Montaigne ultimately represented Australia in 2021, performing the new song ‘Technicolour’. Cerro was also able to connect with one of her biggest musical influences, David Byrne. Byrne makes two appearances on making it!, guesting on the aforementioned ‘always be you’ and ‘gravity’.
“‘Making it’ as a phrase encapsulates so many different sentiments,” said Montaigne in a statement shared with Music Feeds. “For me, it’s partly a meta description of the process of creating a body of work over a long period of time. It’s interrogating success and what it really means to ‘make it’.”
She continued, “My definition of success has radically changed over the years, especially as I’ve grown into my relationship with my partner. I used to want to be ‘Big’, and now I just want to be able to make music forever and have children and figure out how to help people without being rich and how to manage my anxiety through all these things.”
